As some of you are aware, there is a cost involved with running this site. Specifically, the Meetup "software" costs $15 per month. There are minor additional expenses - name tags, paper, toner, the domain name, etc.
We are extremely fortunate to have found a couple of venues that are "free" to use, so, luckily, we don't have those expenses as well. Chris and I made the commitment when we started Decatur Gamers to give it a try and see how it went. In our opinion, it's going very well. We are extremely pleased with the progress so far, and we have many great plans for the future. We have been discussing revenue, and how best to keep the group afloat without taxing the organizers wallets too much. Meetup has the brilliant <sarcasm> idea of securing "sponsors" to pay for the group, but unfortunately, our area and the current economy will keep that from happening. We also discussed dues, but we're hesitant to make Decatur Gamers "cost" anything. We want anyone who wants to join us to be able to join us. So, we're going to try a "donation" system and see how that works. At each Meetup (beginning with our July 15, 2009 Open Game Night), we are going to have a "donation box" set out. We are asking for $1 to $2 per person, per Meetup to help us cover expenses. This is a completely optional donation - please do not feel that you MUST donate to be able to come to a Meetup. If you had a good time at a Meetup, slip a buck or two into the box. If you don't have a buck to donate, don't worry about it! We're not going to be keeping track of who pays what and when. $1 to $2 per person, per Meetup is all we want. I don't really want anyone to donate more than that. I don't want anyone to feel that any one person is "saving" the group or anything.
