I've never really played any miniatures games, are there any good WW2 ones that someone would be interested in bringing to a meetup or setting up a game night for? I'd love to learn

I think that would depend if you're looking for something you get to paint yourself, like Flames of War, which is a VERY popular WW2 minis game, or something prepainted like an Axis & Allies Minis game (be it Naval or land-based).

I've played A&A, which I enjoy very much, but I'm looking to expand a little. As of right now, I'm just looking for some ideas or to see if anyone has anything we can play for me to see what I really like. As for painting myself or prepainted, it doesn't really matter to me.

I'd talk with Bill Owen. His WW2 Command Decision miniature game is a good way to see what you think about miniature battles. I am more partial to the Musket and Sword era because it is less complicated.

I have tried numerous rulesets over 39 years and have settled on Command Decision/Test of Battle (typically called TOB) available from www.testofbattle.com ...here's several reasons why:

1. Most accurate for the effort involved

2. Playable in different scales (both figure scale and ground scale)... in fact I have collections in 1:600, 1:285 and 1:87th scales... with 1 cm/50 yards, 2/3"/50 yards and 1"/50 yards respectively.... on a 20x30", 48x72" or 72x108" tables respectively.

3. Well supported with products with ready-made scenarios and reference materials and a forum of hundreds of fans* for asking questions. Scenario books cover North Africa, Market Garden, German Fallschirmjaeger 1940 etc. The rules themselves include both France 1944 and East Front. Some is available free of charge on the TOB site.

4. Numerous central Illinois gamers play it regularly already.

5. One of the largest and most spectacular WWII miniatures collections in the world is located here in town! In 1:285 it belongs to a friend who doesn't play much any more but he lets me "check'em out" like a library!

PS I can't really speak to Flames of War but it strikes me as an overly simplistic set that's more of a marketing ploy to sell lots of stuff. The impression I get is that FOW is less challenging and that's part of the appeal of TOB is that it is challenging to play which allows match-up's between players of varying experience levels.

I have played Flames of War. I enjoyed it well enough. Bill is correct in that it focuses more on being an enjoyable game versus being an accurate simulation. They have good marketing people though and have thus become quite popular.

I would like to try out Blitzkreig Commander. I have the same company's Future War Commander which I like (and will host a game if I ever have enough minis ready).

That all being said, if we could get enough people together for TOB, I'm all for it.

Sounds like we need to plan another miniature battle over the Christmas break, so we give your friend's miniatures some playing time. Let me know if anything develops.

If you can scare up some people and pick a date, I could probably put a game together between Thanksgiving and Christmas (I'll see what weekend is best for me). But once my daughter gets home the weekend of December 19, I will be incommunicado.

Unfortunately, I think most people are scared by the volume of charts that CD has and that's too bad because it flows quite naturally after playing a few turns. So the simulation may be twice as accurate for 10% extra work.

And I can call the SPI guys to see if they can come over... or we could take the game over there if the Decatur area bunch just can't get started with TOB.

Sounds like there are 3 interested players for TOB... Chris, Rick and Steve. Another 1-2 players would fit and certainly be welcome. How about you?

I am looking at Saturday 12/5/09 and nothing else is currently planned for that date. Is that date okay with you?

Steve asked if we could do a game of Civil War miniatures and I am less likely able to put that together in time. But if that's all you will play, advise and I will note that for when we can.
