Decatur Gamers Message Board › General Chatter › Fall Recruiting

Fall is nearly upon us and that means that Millikin and Richland will once again be in session. We should take the opportunity to try to recruit at those institutions. Rick has gotten us into RCC, we'll need to print up some fliers, get them approved, and get them posted. Millikin is a tougher nut to crack - at a minimum I think we need to see if we can get fliers approved and put them up. However, I think that the "rules" might dictate that only organized groups post fliers. Anyone know a student a Millikin that might be willing to help out, or is there someone that wants to do the research?

Yes, everything that gets hung up at millikin must have a (literal) stamp of approval on it.

Richland is the same way.. everything has to have a stamp of approval...

Right, these things we know. Now, how do we overcome these obstacles?

In the Millikin area there are plenty of telephone poles and such that are ripe for signage. Who's in charge of creating these posters? I would like to be involved.

I assumed that the Graphic Design Committee is in charge of stuff like posters too. At my office, I can print to impressively large 13x19" but it's not free: $.85 (for color, or 11x17" for $.50, or letter size flier for $.25. Has any ever used the site that will print 17x22" for $2 each (plus $10 flat shipping): http://www.shortrunpo...
But to me the design is the 3rd step in the process, with the first 2 being how to get it "where" you want to be. And the often overlooked 2nd step of who writes what it is to say.... should be a different person(s) from the artist(s). There is another approach to consider: ask for an intern, i.e. get the head of the art department, Ed Walker (who I know and have gotten interns for projects before), to put out the word that a local 112-member game club needs help with two projects plus wants to see if a Millikin branch makes sense... and ask if any of the students are gamers and interested in helping. If it's involved enough (like making a logo, multiple formats), Ed could award him/her extra credit. If the candidate is a gamer, and outgoing enough (not all artists are salesmen!) you could ask him/her to see about starting an official game club and design the poster/flier also. It might also appeal better than what a 55-year-old guy might make! The main downside, is that you have to put it off until the students arrive (unless if Ed knows someone ideal he could call right away) and students tend to overbook themselves and may disappear or drag their feet. The obvious extra upside is that an official club could use Millikin facilities to some degree. So I think it's worth pursuing. Unless if someone's already been shot down by Ed, I will call him later in the week. Let me know. |

Great input, Bill! I've actually thought about doing a poster for placement at Capital Comics. Having our little flier there has brought quite a few new members, and I think an actual "poster-sized" ad would be great there. But that's another discussion.
Bill, if you want to contact Ed and see what he says, please go ahead. That seems like a good step in the right direction to Millikin. And, yes, if the Graphic Design committee also wants to act as the defacto marketing committee for this project (let's call it the Higher Education Recruitment Drive - or HERD ), that would be great. |

Yeah, you are going to have to keep bugging the heck out of the Millikin people. They are extremely slow and disinterested in anything outside of their own little world. I have been down there three times to get flyers posted and called them back. All I got was they would get back with me when everything was alright.
