This thread is about the ruleset designed by GDW's Frank Chadwick with Greg Novak from Bloomington & Champaign respectively. I added this rather than keeping adding to the Sword & Flame thread. Numerous historical scenarios are available from a NZ'er group's site: http://homepages.para...
The ruleset is popular among central Illinois miniature gamers and has a 1386 members worldwide who are part of a yahoo group called vnblist. I get a daily digest from that list for ideas and errata. The ruleset is available from www.testofbattle.com You can see pictures of the 6 people who have played 1-3 times locally and their first Civil War game at: http://s777.photobuck... We plan to play 2nd Manassas next but no date set. Then we want to start a Civil War campaign of numerous linked battles. I will post when Greg Novak hosts a game (lately American Revolution) or others in the area like Central Illinois Tabletop Wargamers: Mike Wallis sent me the following information for the Saturday, August 14th CITW meeting, which will be at The Game Room, on the square in Washington, IL. Morning Session - 0900 to noon: American Civil War, Volley and Bayonet rules, Rich Nelson Hear the bugle blowing? Smell the powder smoke? If so, you may be somewhat familiar with Rich's Civil War games. Put on your blues and forage cap, or your butternut jacket and shoes (if you have them) and fall into rank. |

Got a chance to go to the CITW event last Saturday and had a blast. I got to play VNB Civil War battles with Rich. We fought a hypothetical battle during the Shenandoah Valley Campaign 1862. As the Union player, I sent the Rebels running back to Richmond which was fun.
Also, I got a chance to try out the Battles of Napoleon: Lion and Eagle. I enjoyed the game; it had a similar feel to a miniatures game. The only downside I see is the price tag $100 for one game and the small scale of the battles. You can at best replay fights between four divisions each side with cavalry or infantry and two pieces of artillery. The scenarios are set up in such a way that each side is equal or possesses a slight advantage. In our scenario, the French possessed an artillery battery and two divisions positioned on high ground while the Brits had three infantry and one cavalry division. Overall though, a pretty solid game and it should be more interesting once FFG and Nexus starts cranking out expansions for the system. They have plans for an Austrian, Russian, and Prussian expansion with more game boards, cards, and pieces. I hope Mike Wallis will be bringing this one to future game events. |

Huzzah Bill on a great miniature event. If we keep this up, we'll eventually have our own miniature group for Decatur.
